Learning Log : Relative Pronouns

Pronouns……

Pronouns are words used to replace a noun that has been previously mentioned.

There are many kinds: personal, possessive, reciprocal, reflexive, emphatic, relative, demonstrative and interrogative.

Possessive pronouns…
-Words that refer to the ownership of an item…
Eg.yours,hers,his,mine,its,theirs,ours
This book belongs to me.It is mine.


Relative pronouns
-That,which,what,who,whose,whom,where
Eg.
I am returning the pen. I borrowed the pen from you.
Answer :
I am returning the pen which/that I borrowed from you.

I met Harry.His father is a doctor.
Answer:I met Harry whose father is a doctor.

This is the girl.She lives in that house.
Answer:This is the girl who lives in that house.


It is important to know which relative pronoun to use on what:
That can be used for people,animals,insects or things.


Which is used for animals and things


Who,whose and whom refer to people only.


Where refers to place…



Note:It is important to place the relative pronoun at the correct place within the sentence.Otherwise,it will sound funny.
